초록
This essay examines the meaning of trauma experienced by individuals and communities of the Philippines represented in Gina Apostol’s Gun Dealer’s Daughter. Soledad suffering from trauma, confronts her painful past through autobiographical writing. By reviewing and investigating the past related with the traumatic incidents, Soledad finds out she is in conflict with two selves: one of the United States and one of the Philippines. The two conflicting selves cannot be reconciled and they drive her into mental crisis. Significantly, she feels traumatic symptoms when she faces the collective traumas of Filipinos produced by the Marcos dictatorship and colonial history. By connecting the injury inflicted by herself on her own body to those damaged and dead bodies, empathy and understanding are made possible. Further, inner witness established from her dissociative psyche of trauma, witnesses all the pain of her and the Filipino people, and how their traumas occurred. By so doing, she becomes a witness against the authorities who interrupt or change her storytelling about her past.
