초록
Chang-rae Lee’s fifth novel, On Such a Full Sea, imagines a dystopian future world that mirrors the present capitalist American society. This paper explores the way the protagonist, Fan, travels across the three closed worlds of B-mor, the Charter villages, and the open counties, disturbing and changing their people. Like a virus, she is elemental and consists in these two alternative modes: mobility and persistence. Her movement is so contagious that the ‘we,’ the residents of B-mor as a first-person plural voice, starts to falter and doubt their longtime stability and prosperity when they follow her journey and tell her story. They question the collective value over being an individual, protest against governmental power, and demand the release of Fan’s boyfriend, Reg, whose immunity to ‘C-disease’ makes him an object of medical research. As Fan has no destinations except the road leading to another world, the ‘we’ of B-mor is expected to find a way to an open and free society. This novel challenges us to seek common actions to survive without prioritizing the collective over the individual in this post-pandemic world.
