초록
This paper explores the flight and the creation of the child flâneur in Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events (1999-2006), which is a children’s metafiction that both refers to and subverts traditional literary conventions. Throughout this study, I will refer to children who escape from normative identities to observe and learn about an unfathomable world and create new subjects, stories, and worlds as child flâneurs. The Baudelaires―Violet, a girl who excels at engineering inventions; Klaus, a boy who immerses himself in reading and writing; and Sunny, a baby who is just learning to speak and shows a talent for cooking―deconstruct binary boundaries such as good/bad, child/adult, and female/male. These three siblings embody the children of the new millennium who violate traditional literary and social norms and draw escape lines to create their own paths.
