Abstract

This study investigates how the graphic novel, No Fear Shakespeare’s Hamlet can function as an educational text to foster imaginative reading. The graphic novel adaptation of Hamlet leverages its theatrical elements and graphic novel techniques to stimulate the reader’s imagination. The graphic novel incorporates key elements from the original play—its theatrical rhythm and spectacular effects—which heighten reader engagement and inspire diverse interpretations. Specifically, the discrepancy between a character’s dialogue and their visual portrayal creates a sense of defamiliarization, prompting readers to “look beyond the expected.” Graphic novel techniques like sequence, gutter or lines also encourage the reader’s imaginative reading. Readers create the missing scenes and stories by interpreting the sequence and gutter of segmented images. Graphic novel’s lines show the story teller’s hand print or marks so that the readers make a personal relationship with the text. No Fear Shakespeare’s Hamlet exemplifies an effective educational text through its creative adaptation of the original play.
