敦煌寫本スタイン2463 『成實論章』 校譯 (一) ――四諦

Abstract

The most significant text in the Chinese study of Abhidharma might be Harivarman’s (4 C.E.) *Satyasiddhiśāstra, translated by Kumārajīva (344?-413?), which flourished in the first half of the Nanbei era, encompassing the Liu Song (劉宋), Southern Qi (南齊), Liang (梁), and Northern Wei (北魏) dynasties. However, its overall characteristics are hard to grasp since most of the texts written in this era have been lost, except for the eight individual fragments found in Dunhunag and Turfan. Among these eight, in this paper, I examine the Stein 2463, Chengshi lun zhang (成實論章, the Zhang[章]-style Commentary on the *Satyasiddhiśāstra, provisional title). In the first section, I discuss basic information such as the chronology, regional provenance, and the background of the text in order to lay the foundation of this research. The findings can be summarized as follows: 1. The fragment was composed in the Northern Wei dynasty between 494 and 535 C.E., where Luoyang (洛陽) was defined as the capital. 2. The fragment can be regarded as a record of the lectures that the master monk gave his disciples. In the second section, I provide the critical text of the first chapter of the fragment, “The Four Truths” (provisional title). Finally, in the third section, I provide the entire translation of this critical text of “The Four Truths.” Further research and the critical edition and translation of the rest of the text will be presented in a subsequent paper.
