Abstract
A ‘street’ performs its own functions in our daily lives and literature and has constantly changed its meanings with the times. Today when the information and knowledge industries and networks of market areas are considered more important than ever, it is being recognized as a space of communication and spread where many types of information have been accumulated through various methods and as a primary element and object of cultural contents. In this situation, it is very important to ensure its sustainability and authenticity by grasping and restoring its nature, for the ‘street’ that has lost its nature and a specialized street creation project on it degenerate into imitations or kitsches of the existing examples, even causing concern that it’s nature will be damaged. The autogenous ability to prepare careful alternatives is also required while responding constantly and actively to the changes, with the ‘street’ reflecting the local residents’ capabilities. With such a critical mind, this paper intended to look at storytelling examples of alleyways of Jung-gu in Daegu - Jung-gu has the catchphrase “1,000 alleyways, 1,000 stories” - and sought ways to strengthen its meanings and the local identity, making Bukseong-ro a subject for discussion - as for Bukseong-ro, the necessity of storytelling of the Street is being highlighted, along with the necessity of developing the Street. The area that was discussed is the section between Daewoo Building, situated at Daegu Station Intersection, and the entrance of Dalseong Park - the section was Daegu’s best high street during the Japanese colonial era and was the center of Daegu’s commerce and culture from the post-Japanese colonial era to the mid 1960s. Also ‘Pig Alley’, which has grown along with ‘Bukseong Industrial Tools Street’, is still barely surviving and various cultural spaces (including ‘Bukseong-ro Tool museum’) have recently been created in the Alley, which is being mentioned as a place(場) for formation of cultural networks. Therefore we can understand the Alley as a unique space where we can fully feel the past, today, and tomorrow. But the existing stories are concentrated in the era. For this reason, the identity of the very area - in the area a unique culture has blossomed since the Korean War - can be undermined and concern about only little understanding of historical meanings of the area is lurking and therefore it is thought that adequate discussions should be held. In addition, this study looked at spaces and programs that can be presented as alternatives for strengthening the local identity and for seeking the sustainable growth of the area and found stories of the Alley that can help show the true character of ‘Bukseong-ro’, the Daegu industry, and Daegu sentiments, which have hardly been known to date. It is thought that such efforts of the paper will make a contribution to forming Bukseongro’s own specific identity - Bukseong-ro in heavy need of storytelling for restoration of the identity.
