Abstract
This study positively analysed the theoretical effects of the <Resonance In May> performed at one of historic sites of the Gwangju Democracy Movement on May, 2019. First, its aspect as a place-specific play was examined. In the first show was performed at the office of the spokesman of the struggle leadership, actors spoke less to induce the audiences join in it. When the audiences joined in it, they experienced the aura given off from the performance place and honored the spirits of fallen patriots. The second show was performed at the front yard in front of the civil service office of the old provincial hall and although it was not smoothly performed because of noise from events in the surroundings, it rather reminded the audiences of the May of 1980. The accidentality at the performance resulted in productive achievements. The third show was performed in the semibasement of the civil service office of the old provincial hall, and most of it was composed of body washing behaviors, which was a new experience to the audiences. Public memory the place held that was recalled as actors' gesture was added to materiality the place itself had. Therefore, the audiences had opportunities to deeply lament the May of 1980 deeply through the special experiences. Second, this study positively analysed the audiences' experiences. After the show ended, friends of the author and actors' acquaintances were surveyed about the show on the Social Network Service and the answers were analysed. To the question that you deeply did lament the fallen patriots of the Gwangju Democracy Movement after you saw <Resonance In May>, 76.91% of the subjects were affirmative, which indicates that the intention was achieved well. To the next question that where you did lament the fallen patriots the most deeply, 15 of the 30 responded that they lamented the most deeply to see the third show performed at the semibasement. 8 of them were related to the place. That is, it was discovered that the play perfectly realized a theoretical feature of place-specific play as 8 responses could not be made unless the show was a place-specific play. Finally, to identify which factor of the place had the effect on audiences ' experience, this study analysed the frequency the words relating to place appeared. As a result, it was discovered that the audiences would be sympathetic if a place-specific play was performed at a place which had historicity, had its original state preserved well and was rarely exposed to visitors. As actors performed <Resonance In May> at the historic site of the Gwangju Democracy Movement, the historic place became an ignition point with life force. The audiences interacted with the aura of the place as a position of visitor and deeply lamented the spirits as they joined in the play as subjects.
