Abstract
Eugene O'Neill was aware of his inordinate difficulty with endings from his first attempt to write plays. Though closure has always been problematic for playwright, O'Neill had recognized his own difficulty with endings for better artistic judgement. One reason the endings fail for early dramas is their almost ubiquitous reliance upon violence. Other reason his early play endings have often failed to satisfy viewers is his explicitness. The purpose of this thesis is to study O'Neill's quest for open closure in Beyond the Horizon. Beyond the Horizon was his first play to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize and his first full-length drama that is remarkable for an explicitness, highly predictable drama and its lack of ambiguity. This play is composed of three acts, each divided into two scenes. Audience expectations regarding closure are set up in the first act. The plot has proceeded rather steadily toward its predictable end. The spectator's perception of structure has led him to anticipate that closure will be synonymous with the ultimate fulfillment of the father's prophetic warning to his sons. The important structural device that the audience expects to influence closure is the technique of ironic reversal established early in the play with the brother's exchange of destinies and repeated at significant intervals throughout the drama. In Beyond the Horizon, instead of being satisfied with the ending within easy grasp, O'Neill demonstrates his preference for the unattainable by introducing Robert's theatrically heightened speeches in the final scene. Unsettled from his comfortably position, O'Neill needs to rekindle his imagination. Through open closure in Beyond the Horizon, O'Neill could achieve special significance when the spectators compare and categorize the character's situations. He had tried to show the audience special aspect of drama. Thus the audience could gain the valuable insight into human experience.
