Abstract

The purpose of this study is to reinterpret violence, bloody spectacles and controversial subject matters prevalent in Jacobean tragedies, in terms of Antonin Artaud's idea of Theatre of Cruelty, a dramatic theory explained in his work, Theater and Its Double. Ford's 'Tis Pity She's a Whore(1629), produced in the later period of Jacobean era, has caused many debates concerning its subject matter - the incestuous love between brother and sister, bloody spectacles and Ford's ambiguous attitude in treating incestuous love in his drama. Lovers are punished to death as a result of their sacrilegious sin, but they are endowed with heroic quality as well. Artaud briefly analyzed this drama as an excellent example of ‘cruelty’. He adopted the term ‘cruelty’ in his own sense, giving a whole new meaning to the word. It means some metaphysical fear we encounter unexpectedly in everyday life. The purpose of Theatre of Cruelty is to disturb audience's consciousness radically in order to make them face uncomfortable realities of life they prefer to evade. ‘Cruelty’ in 'Tis Pity She's a Whore is an absolute moral purity, uncompromising metaphysical attitudes of lovers. Viewed in terms of Theatre of Cruelty, their incestuous love is not a lust but a vehicle to raise questions on conventional values, secularized religious teachings and human desires in drastic ways. The play has been regarded as the representative example of the Jacobean decadent play with its sensationalism and moral decay. But its theatrical devices of cruelty as well as its subject matter can be interpreted to produce totally different meanings in perspective of Artaud's idea of cruelty.
