설총 이야기의 검토와 스토리텔링 개발 방안 연구 —사실성과 환상성을 중심으로

사회적·정치적·경제적 구조, 문화적 정체성, 집단 기억 형성에 영향을 미친 역사인물은 오늘날 지자체의 주요 관심사 중 하나로 자리 잡고 있다. 이들의 생애는 단순한 사실 기록을 넘어 민중적 구전과 문학적 재구성을 통해 상징적 의미로 재발견될 수 있다. 이는 진실성과 환상성이 공존하면서 역사인물에 대한 다층적 이해와 시대정신의 투영을 가능하게 하기 때문이다. 다만, 역사인물이 내재한 장점과 가능성을 오롯이 환기하려면 기록된 사실과 다양한 이야기를 통합하여 문학적 진실을 도출하고, 역사인물을 입체적으로 이해하기 위한 지속적인 노력이 요구된다. 본 연구는 이러한 생각을 바탕으로 경산시에서 원효, 일연과 더불어 ‘삼성현’으로 선양되어 온 홍유후 설총과 관련한 기록과 설화를 사실성과 환상성의 관점에서 검토하고, 서사적 진실과 역사적 진실을 포함하는 스토리텔링 개발 방안을 제시하고자 하였다. 그 결과, 역사적 기록(사실성 > 환상성), 지역 공간이 형성한 문화적 기억(사실성 ≒ 환상성), 『홍유후실기』 속 서사(사실성 < 환상성)를 비교 분석함으로써 설총의 다층적 면모를 조망하고, 스토리텔링 개발 방안도 제안할 수 있었다. 이러한 연구는 단순히 과거를 탐색하는 데 그치는 것이 아니라, 역사적 사실과 지역적 요소, 문학적 상상력을 결합한 스토리텔링을 제안함으로써 설총을 현대적 맥락에서 새롭게 조명하는 작업으로서 의의를 지닐 것이다
Abstract
Historical figures who have shaped social, political, and economic structures, cultural identities, and collective memory remain central to contemporary discourse, particularly within local governance. Their lives extend beyond factual documentation, acquiring symbolic significance through oral traditions and literary reinterpretations. This interplay between historical truth and narrative embellishment allows for a multidimensional understanding of such figures, reflecting the evolving spirit of the times. A comprehensive reassessment of historical figures necessitates an integrative approach that harmonizes recorded history with various interpretive traditions, thereby reconstructing their legacy with greater nuance. This study examines the records and narratives surrounding Hongyuhu(弘儒侯) Seolchong(薛聰), a revered figure in Gyeongsan-si, alongside Wonhyo(元曉) and Ilyeon(一然), collectively honored as ‘amsunghyun(三聖賢).’ Through the dual lenses of realism and fantasy, this research proposes a storytelling framework that incorporates both historical accuracy and narrative depth. By systematically analyzing Seolchong through historical records(predominantly factual), local cultural memory(a convergence of fact and fiction), and legendary accounts (predominantly fictional) as depicted in Hongyuhu-silgi(弘儒侯實紀), this study illuminates the layered dimensions of his persona. Beyond a conventional historical inquiry, it offers a framework for reinterpreting Seolchong in a modern context—integrating historical fidelity, regional heritage, and literary imagination to forge a compelling and culturally resonant storytelling paradigm.
