초록

본고는 벨기에 출신의 연출가 이보 반 호바의 연출 방식을 지각 드라마투르기의 사례로 살펴본다. 반 호바는 2023년 최근까지 암스테르담 인터내셔널 시어터(International Theatre of Amsterdam, ITA)의 예술 감독으로 주류 연극과 실험 연극의 경계를 넘나들어왔다. 이 과정에서 그는 전례 없는 국제적인 관심을 집중시키며 이른바 글로벌 연극의 실체를 증명하고서 21세기에 연극이 지녀야 할 공적 가치와 가능성을 실현하고 있다고 평가받는다. 본고는 이러한 성과가 특히 그의 희곡 읽기에서 출발하여 배우와 관객의 지각의 경험을 활성화시켜 수행되고 있음을 확인한다. 본고가 탐색한 그의 드라마투르기 방법론은 희곡 텍스트의 내용을 동시대의 상황으로 환기하는 데서 행화적 읽기와 정동의 체현된 연기, 그리고 지각·인지를 기반으로 한 관객 소통 방식에 기반하고 있다고 본다. 이 같은 논점을 기반으로 본고는 영국 국립극단제작의 동영상 상연(NT LIVE)으로 국내에 소개된 <다리에서 바라본 풍경>과 토닐 그룹 암스테르담이 제작하여 2019년 11월 국내 LG 아트센터에서 공연한 <로마 비극>을 분석한다. 본고의 의도는 과거의 텍스트 그리고 외국 희곡을 토대로 한 공연이 어떻게 동시대 관객의 보편적 현실로 환기될 수 있는가를 탐색하는데 있다.

Abstract

This paper examines how the classical cannons written in the distant past and in different cultures could make the audiences aware of their realities with two theatre productions, A View from the Bridge and Roman Tragedies, directed by Ivo van Hove and Jan Versweyveld. Van Hove was the artistic director of the International Theatre of Amsterdam until 2023, attracting unprecedented global attention to him and his productions. This paper explores how he could achieve the public theatrical value and the possibilities of crossing over the experimental and the mainstream theatre through his dramaturgy. This paper emphasizes that his directorial dramaturgy invigorates individual perceptual－cognitive functions to bridge the situational phenomena and the performer’s organic body. Notably, his enactive readership, the performer’s sympathetic emotionalism and embodied acting, the communitive perceptual route between the performance and the audience are the primary concerns this paper examines. To trace this, the first part of this paper tried to make theoretical elaboration with enactive readership, embodied acting, and communicative methods. Then, the second part analyses A View from the Bridge and Roman Tragedies, which Korean theatre fans have watched, based on his perceptual dramaturgy. This paper investigates Ivo van Hove’s dramaturgical method to transform the classical canons into audience－direct reality.
