Abstract

This study focused on the possibility and importance of Maeul community meetings as a type of public sphere in the life-world. Therefore, an analysis was attempted on the communicative action of residents participating in community building at Maeul community meetings. Based on Habermas' theory of communicative action, the purpose of the study is to explore how communicative action is performed in terms of subject, behavior, and reason, and what are the foundations and limitations that enable it. The results of the analysis focusing on the meeting case of Dreamlight Happiness Mom, one of the Maeul communities in Daejeon, are as follows. First, it is the subjectification of communication based on positive mutual recognition and autonomy, second, behavioral coordination through common understanding and voluntary consent, and third, community rationality and validity verification. The basis for communication at the Maeul community meeting was the process of sharing the life-world, relational time, horizontal mediator of behavioral coordination, and the characteristics of the Maeul community as a voluntary association of the village. On the other hand, the relationship between practice and communicative action, the identification of opinions and identity, and other practical problems were found to be limited. In addition, based on the results of this study, practical and academic discussions were proposed as follows. First, it is an educational approach to the possibility and scalability of Maeul community meetings as a public sphere to defend the life-world, second, the relationship between communicative action and social capital, third, the interrelationship between foundation and limitation, fourth, the need to design a public sphere for the 'sharing' process, and fifth, the role of a mediator to help communication. Accordingly, as a way to revitalize the public sphere of civil society, it is necessary to link it with various democratic civic education that supports communicative action of residents at Maeul community meetings.
