Abstract
In medical clinical practice, prescribing appropriate pain control according to the patient's level of pain is one of the most important medical practices. However, objective pain assessment is impossible in cases where it is difficult to clearly express pain depending on the age and condition of actual patients. Therefore, in this paper, we evaluate the effectiveness of a pain measurement method based on facial expression recognition using deep learning technology. The Delaware Pain Database is used as a facial expression dataset for deep learning training, and the degree of pain according to facial expressions is classified into four types: no pain, mild, moderate, and severe, and VGG-16 is applied as a transfer learning model. The simulation results showed an accuracy of 72% in classifying pain level 4, and an accuracy of 86% in classifying the presence or absence of pain. These results imply the objective validity of a pain measurement method based on facial expression recognition compared to traditional pain assessment methods such as Numeric Rating Scale and Visual Analog Scale.
