Abstract

Abstract Yi Kwangsu's(李光洙) Critiques of Christianity Shin Kwang-Cheol Yi Kwangsu was one of the towering intellectuals in early modern Korea. He published numerous articles on various subjects. This essay tries to analyze his critique of Korean Christianity. Yi Kwangsu wrote two articles about the Korean church in one year. One was about the historical contribution of the Korean church and the other was about its faults. Yi Kwangsu highly appreciated the Korean church's contribution to both modernization and the distribution of Han-geul. However, he criticized that Christianity failed to accomplish enculturation in Korea. His criticism about Korean Christianity is of great significance. First, it was a critique of Korean Christianity by a man of great intelligence who remained outside the church. Secondly, it was made in the early period of Korean church history. His view of Christianity was typical in that he regarded Korean Protestantism as a sign of western civilization.
