Abstract

This article is a preliminary study of Protestant women missionaries who had visited Korea during the Japanese colonial period by observing the intersection between the modern deaconess movement and the pioneer women missionaries of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South in Korea. This study aims to introduce the modern deaconess movement to Korean readers and to demonstrate its relevance to the study of Protestant women missionaries in the light of the formation of the vocational identity and missiology of women, namely, the making of a Christian home in the public sphere. This study begins with the modern deaconess movement of Europe and the United States in the historical context and attempts to look for dots to connect the modern deaconess movement with the women missionaries of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South in Korea. It focuses on the educational background and spiritual formation of those who visited Korea after graduating from the Scarritt Bible and Training School, the only deaconess and missionary training institution in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. It also attempts to show how the Woman’s Missionary Council of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South turned the social settlement work into social evangelism as a mission project not only for domestic missions but also for overseas mission fields. Accordingly, women missionaries of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South launched community centers for social evangelistic work in Seoul, Songdo, Wonsan, Choonchun, and Chulwon in Korea. The study of the modern deaconess movement is expected to be a meaningful reference for the history of Korean Christianity by providing a new perspective for the nature of Protestant women missionaries during the formation of Christianity in Korea.
