Abstract
This study examines two major debates concerning the first Protestant church in the Honam region, known as the Eunsong-ri Chapel in Jeonju. The first issue centers on the precise geographical location of the original chapel. Three competing theories have emerged: (1) the “next to Haengun Supermarket” site, based on oral testimonies from early church members; (2) the “field next to Joeun Church” site, grounded in historical road networks and topographical analysis; and (3) the “Myeongryun Mansion” site, identified by Kim Kyung-mi through analysis of the 1900 map Wansan Dohyeong and early missionary documents. Kim’s argument, which combines Korean and foreign sources, has added clarity to previous discussions and represents a turning point in the debate. The second issue concerns the authenticity of a well-known photo long believed to depict the original 1893 Eunsong-ri chapel. Although widely circulated since the late 1990s, the photo is now thought to show the Maegye Church, which was rebuilt in the 1920s. A more reliable photo of the Eunsong-ri chapel appears in a 1904–1905 missionary publication, showing two female missionaries and Korean women standing in front of a thatched building. In conclusion, this study reviews the competing interpretations surrounding the location of the first Eunsong-ri chapel and the authenticity of its related photograph. Among the three major theories regarding its location, I support the argument presented by Kim Kyung-mi, which—based on her analysis of the 1900 Wansan Dohyeong map and missionary documents—offers the most convincing historical and geographical evidence. It is now well established that the Southern Presbyterian Mission’s Wansan Station was located in the area around present-day Myeongnyun Mansion. However, the question of which of the five thatched-roof houses depicted on the map corresponds to the original Eunsong-ri chapel purchased by Jung Hae-won remains open. Further research is needed, especially in light of missionary descriptions indicating that the chapel may have been located slightly downhill from the other residences.
