Abstract

Implications of Chinese-Russia Joint Military Exercise : from the Perspective of Chinese military strategy Kim, Ok-Joon․Kim, Kwanok China and Russia implemented a joint military exercise that called as "Peace Mission 2005" in August, 2005. The joint military exercise between China and Russia was much beyond the anti-terror military exercise or emergence rescue training in terms of degree of exercise strength. The Peace Mission 2005 was for China to verify its actual warfare capabilities in the joint military exercise with Russia, the militarily advanced nation, to promote adaptability and rationality of the Chinese People Liberation Army in the case of military conflict with Taiwan or U.S. military intervention in the China-Taiwan relations. Therefore, this exercise can be understood as a military strategy of the Hu Jin-tao regime and in that sense, the political implication of the China-Russia joint military exercise should be limited to foster the overall bilateral relations between the two countries. In other words, it better be analyzed as a Chinese military strategy to stabilize security of the Northeast Asian Region by military cooperation with Russia. It can be an exaggeration that if some believe that the joint military exercise was designed and implemented to oppose or challenge the U.S. hegemonic power by changing political and security relations among the Northeast Asian countries. It should be understood an effort to promote and innovate the military capabilities of the Chinese military itself.
