초록
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate changes in oxygen saturation (SPO2) and end-tidal carbon dioxidepressure (PEtCO2) following application of hyperoxygenation and hyperinflation before closed endotracheal suction inpatients on mechanical ventilation in intensive care units (ICUs). Methods: This study adopted a cross-over repeateddesign; 30 neurosurgical patients admitted to the ICU were provided with hyperoxygenation and hyperinflation beforeclosed endotracheal suction, and SPO2 and PEtCO2 were measured. The collected data were analyzed by RepeatedMeasures ANOVA and t-test. Results: The SPO2 was maintained within the normal range without significant changefollowing application of hyperoxygenation and hyperinflation before closed endotracheal suction. Although there was astatistically significant difference in the PEtCO2 over time, there were no significant differences between groups orbetween groups over time. When hyperoxygenation was provided, SPO2 was well maintained for a certain period of timeafter closed endotracheal suction. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that pre-suction oxygenation may be essential forhypoxia prevention in stable patients, but further research is needed to establish reference values for using PEtCO2 asa hypoxia monitoring tool.
