선입견, 역사 그리고 이성 : 가다머 ‘선입견’ 개념의 비판적 고찰

이 논문은 가다머의 철학적 해석학의 중요한 구성 요소 중 하나인 선입견 개념에 대한 비판적 고찰이다. 철학적 해석학의 관심사는 인간의 유한한 삶에 그 근거를 두고 인간존재에 대한 보편성을 자각하는 데에 있다. 가다머는 인간을 시간과 공간을 초월할 수 없는 유한한 삶의 주체이자 불완전한 실존적 존재로 규정한다. 그는 유한한 인간의 삶을 전제로 한 이해의 역사성과 선입견이 서로 긴밀히 연결되어 있다고 보고, 인간이 역사적 존재라는 사실을 부각시킨다. 가다머는 선입견 개념의 정당화를 주장하면서 부정적인 개념으로만 취급되어 왔던 선입견 개념의 긍정적인 측면을 부각시키며 선입견의 복권을 주장한다. 더욱이 가다머는 유한한 삶을 사는 인간이 그 시대의 요구에 따라 선입견을 형성하고, 역사적 존재로서 인간은 선입견에 의해 고착된 전통의 권위를 충실히 따라야 한다고 주장한다. 하지만 가다머의 철학적 해석학은 특정한 문화와 사회의 구성원들에게 익숙한 선입견으로 받아들여진 전통에 대한 비판적 성찰의 가능성에 대해 미온적인 입장을 취하고 있다. 이 논문은 이러한 가다머의 선입견 개념의 문제점을 지적하고 이성의 비판적 성찰의 가능성을 타진한다. 또한 이 논문은 가다머의 시간간격, 즉 시간의 흐름이 지난 후에야 참된 선입견과 그릇된 선입견 개념의 구분이 가능하다는 통시적 측면의 분석에 대한 재 고찰을 시도한다. 이를 위해 가다머의 통시적 역사관과 시간간격에 대한 문제점을 제기하고 공시적 관점에서의 분석을 시도한다. 요컨대, 이 논문은 가다머의 선입견 개념에 대한 비판적 고찰과 함께 그의 선입견 개념의 타당성을 검증하고 선입견 개념에 대한 새로운 인식을 수립하고자 한다.
Abstract
This study is a critical review of the concept of ‘prejudice’, one of the important components of Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics. The primary concern of philosophical hermeneutics lies in the awareness of the universality of human existence based on the finiteness of human beings. Gadamer articulates human beings are imperfect existential beings that cannot transcend time and space. He considers both the prejudice and historicity of understanding based on the finite human life are closely linked, and prejudice underscores the fact that human beings are historical ones. Gadamer appropriates the concept of prejudice not only by emphasizing the positive aspect of it, but also even claiming the rehabilitation of it. Gadamer argues human beings are the subjectivities that merely live finite human life according to which the demand of the time and human beings follow the authority of the tradition fabricated by the prejudice. However, Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics takes a halfhearted outlook to the possibility of critical reflection in that the prejudice and tradition should necessarily be accepted as taken-for granted notions in certain cultures of society. In addition, this paper attempts to reconsider Gadamer’s understanding of ‘temporal distance’ associated with the notion of prejudice, which distinguishes true prejudice from false prejudice based on the perspective of diachronic analysis. To do this, this study aims to evaluate Gadamer’s thought on the concept of prejudice that is mainly derived from the historically diachronic exploration by way of proposing a synchronic analysis.
