Abstract

This study aimed to enhance the ergonomic performance of Nuclear, Biological, Chemical (NBC) protective clothing through pattern design and wearability improvements. The NBC suit, previously developed by a domestic defense company (S-company), exhibited several limitations, including restricted mobility, poor fit, and insufficient com- patibility with both K-1 and K-5 gas masks, owing to its rigid construction and lack of anthropometric considerations. To address these shortcomings, this study conducted a design review of representative NBC protective garments from domestic and international sources using image- and document-based analyses. The functional analysis primarily focused on the S-company prototype, and wearability was evaluated based on movements derived from the MIST (Man-In-Sim- ulant Test) protocol. Based on these findings, an ergonomically enhanced pattern was developed incorporating features such as a three-panel hood, set-in sleeves, articulated elbows and knees, extended garment length, and optimized fastener placement. A prototype was produced and refined via iterative fitting to ensure functional improvement. Although the improved prototype demonstrated enhanced mobility, comfort, and sealing performance, the study was limited by the absence of full-scale protective performance validation (e.g., MIST chamber testing). Future research should involve sim- ulation-based testing and field trials under realistic operational conditions to comprehensively verify the protection and usability. This study presents foundational data and a practical pattern methodology for the next generation of NBC pro- tective clothing, and offers meaningful insights for designing mission-ready garments that balance protection, mobility, and ergonomic comfort.
