Abstract

This study intends to 1) explore the quality of life and social support for breast and gynecologic cancer survivors who believe in the buddhism; 2) examine how Buddhism influences cancer survivors' life based on the principles of Buddhism; and 3) suggest how Buddhism can improve their quality of life under the buddhist thoughts. Two standardized quality of life scales and one spiritual well-being scale about spirituality and religiosity were administered to 33 breast and gynecologic cancer survivors living in Seoul and Gyunggi do. Social support survey as well as the use and needs of supportive care services was also used to investigate social support components. Study findings demonstrated that participants showed the highest score in "a sense of a purpose/mission for their life or a reason for being alive" of religiosity and spirituality items, indicating their spirituality seems to be higher than religiosity. Participants' quality of life score was moderate; however it was lower than the mean score of other studies. Specifically, the mental health summary scores were lower than the physical health summary scores. Overall, social support was positively related to quality of life. Evidences suggest that three of the buddhist thoughts, that is, benevolence, giving, and offering gratitude and repaying, are significantly related to quality of life and social support concepts. Buddhist social work needs to be systemic and organized effectively to approach cancer survivors in the future.
