Abstract

(Graduate School of Buddhist Studies, Dongguk University) Six cleansing technique(ṣaṭkarma)s of Haṭha Yoga practices are closely related to bodily healing. And also these are starting point of that yoga practice. In this paper, therapeutic effects of these techniques are to be studied being focused on Gheraṇḍasaṃhitā(below GhS) and being compared with those of Haṭhapradīpikā(below HP). These techniques are composed of ①dhauti, ②vasti, ③neti, ④laulikī, ⑤trāṭaka, ⑥kapālabhāti. To begin with, the techniques of GhS based on regions of bodily cleansing have two aspects and HP is also same. One is to remove contaminants of the internal parts of body which are gullet, stomach, large intestine, rectum(①, ②, ④). The other is to clean the inside regions, which are defiled by dust and so forth, from nostril to mouth(③, ⑥). These are directly purifying methods for cleaning internal dirty regions of body. And then these techniques of GhS and HP have broadly two types of curing effects of bodily diseases. These two are fundamental and essential condition to stay healthy. The first is to keep balancing 3doṣa. It is especially involved in making and increasing digestive fire of body. It could become the source of all kinds of diseases to be undigested. Therefore, to keep a healthy states, energetic digestive power is top priority. In haṭha yoga like classical yoga, the purpose of curing diseases is making mind calm. And it is obvious that the point of departure of yoga practice is annamayakośa in spite of different order of practices between GhS and HP. Ṣaṭkarma is play a role of firm foundation to move on to next steps which deal with subtle body.
