Abstract
The Buddhist theory of ‘concentration by in-breathing and out-breathing’ based on the Mahānapānasmṛti-sūtra(Pāli, Ānāpānasati-sutta) and the Prāṇāyāma(breath-exercises) of Yoga based on the Yogasūtra-bhāṣya are the foundational means of generating wisdom which at the same time, are the intial step to archive the Dhyāna or Samādhi, the zenith of meditation. Nevertheless, the Buddha affirms the actual exp-erience that it was useless to suffer by Ānāpānasati, whereas Prāṇāyāma of Yoga demands the endurance of suffering by suppressing breathing. Prāṇāyāma, the practice of restraint of breathing, is the fourth stage of Aṣṭāṅga-yoga, which has to be mastered in Āsana. From this basic requirement, the position differs from that of the Mahānapānasmṛti-sūtra, which regards Āsana as a position parallel to ‘concentration by in-breathing and out-breathing.’ ‘Concentration by in-breathing and out-breathing’ limits the number of breaths to ten, including the inspiration and the exhalation, to observe the natural stream of breath as it is. In contrast, Prāṇāyāma of Yoga is basically a practice to artificially stop the flow of breathing. Breathing that proceeds physiologically by the autonomic nerve is bound to have persistence. The theory of ‘Concentration by in-breathing and out-breathing’ never goes against this fact. Prāṇāyāma, on the other hand, is characterized by stopping the continuous progression of breathing. The the theory of ‘concentration by in-breathing and out-breathing’ prevented the abortion of Prāṇāyāma ‘the body is extremely tense and unstable’ by limiting breathing to ten times. To find a corresponding alternative in Prāṇāyāma of Yoga, the fourth Prāṇāyāma can be pointed out. In other words, the fourth Prāṇāyāma, which naturally stops the progression of breath by sequentially overcoming the stages of respiratory depression, deserves to be considered as a device to alleviate the end of Prāṇāyāma. Although there is a significant difference in the breathing methods between Buddhism and Yoga, the correspondences of both sides can be extracted from the orientation of practical theory. In the Yogasūtra-bhāṣya, the foundation of practical theory, which is a causality of ‘Prāṇāyāma → Viśuddhi (purification) → Jñāna (knowledge)’, is also applied to the six stages of ‘concentration by in-breathing and out-breathing.’ Nevertheless, Prāṇāyāma in the case of the Yogasūtra-bhāṣya is presupposed as an ascetic that follows the ancient traditions of India. Consequently, while Prāṇāyāma is part of asceticism, the ‘concentration by in-breathing and out-breathing’ adopts comfort breathing method that does not cause physical and mental suffering.
