Abstract
Sati, samatha and vipassana are the most important of technical terms in meditation. This paper examines the origin of Buddhist meditation related to sati and samatha-vipassana. Ālāra Kalama and Uddaka Rāmaputta were the two teachers of the Buddha to whom he went for instruction after his renunciation. In particular, the two teachers are said to have taught meditation such as the sphere of nothingness(ākiñcaññāyatana) and the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception(nevasaññānāsaññāyatana) to the Buddha, respectively. As a result, the origin of Buddhist meditation related to sati and samatha-vipassana was considered to be derived from other religions. In the field of Indology and Buddhist Studies, the two teachers of the Buddha, as Brahmanical practioners, have described Brahmanical meditation instructed to the Buddha. However, this paper conclusively reveals that Ālāra Kalama and Uddaka Rāmaputta were Nigantha ascetics of Jainism, not Brahmanical practioners. Mahāvastu and Isibhāsiyaāiṁ testify that they are Nigantha ascetics. Mahāvastu and Isibhāsiyaāiṁ are their canonical scriptures of early Buddhism and early Jainism, respectively. Because of this, their ākiñcaññāyatana and nevasaññānāsaññāyatana imply that they are also related to Jainism. In these circumstances, it is almost certain that Ālāra Kalama and Uddaka Rāmaputta are historical figures rather than fictional ones. Furthermore, this paper argues that the four progressive states of meditations(dhyāna/jhāna), which are the basics of Buddhist meditation originates from Nigantha Jainism. This is consistent with the story that the Buddha practiced asceticism for six years before attaining enlightenment. The field of Indology has divided Brahmanism and Śramaṇism into the theory of transformation(pariṇāma-vāda) and the theory of accumulation (Ārambha-vāda), respectively. The problem is that until now, these theories of transformation and the theory of accumulation are explained as being developed into meditation and austerity, respectively. However, this distinction is wrong and needs to be corrected. The results of this study will be the starting point for a new investigation of samatha-vipassana based on sati.
