이 글은 초기불교의 佛傳 속에서 붓다의 일대기와 관련하여 서술된 禪定說에 주목하여 그 의미를 파악해보려는 시도이다. 초기불교경전에 나타난 선정은 정형적인 서술방식을 보이는 동시에 불일치된 내용도 보인다. 특히 니까야와 아함경을 비교분석하면 이러한 상호 불일치의 문제는 더욱 커지게 된다. 지금까지의 초기불교 연구에서 팔리본과 한역본을 비교분석한 연구결과가 적지 않았으나 대부분 니까야를 중심에 두고 한역은 보조자료 정도로만 언급되는 경우가 많았다. 그러나 이 연구에서는 니까야와 아함경에 나타나는 내용의 불일치를 부파불교의 해석이 개입된 것으로 간주함으로써 남북전아함에서 일치된 내용이 붓다의 원음에 가까울 것이라는 가설에 근거하여 작성되었다. 따라서 이 글은 붓다의 일대기에서 중요한 선정으로 등장하는 四禪과 九次第定이 남북전의 내용일치를 근거로 하여 분석할 경우 어떠한 결과가 나타나는가를 논증한 것이다.
Abstract

It can be seen various terms, that is meditation(jhna), mindfulness(sati), concentration(samdhi), come-insight(samatha -vipassan) and so on, for that reason, to make the meaning of meditation clear, it is necessary to examine these terms thoroughly. There is another problem that must be solved. The Existing Buddhist Sciptures are the five Pali Canon(Nikya) and the four Chinese Text(Agama). In these Scriptures, there is inconsistency of contents which expressed the particular event, especially in the Buddha's life. So, I based upon the contents-correspondence between the Pali and Chinese Texts. This paper aims to explicate Buddha and meditation is associated with him. First of all, the Major Event in the Buddha's life is renounce the world, ascetic practices, attainment of Great Wisdom, the state of complete absence of sensation(Nirvna). Basing on contents correspondence in the Both Texts, I tried to explicate the Meditation which connected Major Buddha's Life is the four meditation(Jhna).
