인도후기밀교의 장송의례 문헌연구 __순야사마디바즈라(Śūnyasamādhivajra) 저작의 Mṛtasugatiniyojana를 중심으로__

본고는 인도후기밀교 전통 속에서 성립된 장송의례 문헌 중 하나인 순야사마디바즈라(Śūnyasamādhivajra)의 Mṛtasugatiniyojana(망자를 선취(善趣)로 이음)의 원문에 충실한 한글 번역을 소개함으로써, 인도밀교식 장송의례의 기능과 절차를 고찰하는 데에 목적을 둔다. 이를 통해 우리는 의례 속 딴뜨라 수행의 구체적인 적용을 살펴볼 수 있다. 이 장송 문헌에에서 교시되는 의례의 행법들은 샤이바(Śaiva)를 위시한 다양한 딴뜨라 전통에서도 광범위하게 공유되었던 것들이다. 딴뜨라 의례들은 장례(antyeṣṭi)나 사자구제(mṛtoddhara), 혹은 요가행자가 행하는 자발적인 죽음의 요가(utkrānti) 등으로 기존의 종교전통들과 차별성을 확립하며 발전해 왔다. 이에 본고는 특히 후기밀교의 장례문헌의 연구를 통해 공유된 딴뜨라 수행들이 밀교 안에서 어떻게 불교 교설에 맞춘 독자적인 장송 의례로서 발전하는지를 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위해 Mṛtasugatiniy-ojana가 경전적 전거로 삼고 있는 Guhyasamājatantra와 Sarvadurgati-pariśodhatantra의 관련 내용도 함께 살펴본다. 더불어 본 밀교장송의례 자체가 보여주는 고유한 의례들, 망자를 위해 행해지는 ‘사자소생요가’를 비롯하여, 화장, 유골의 수습 등의 절차의 내용을 소개하고, 수습한 유골을 대상으로 행해지는 ‘유골타골의례’와 ‘유골씻김의례’ 등의 의례 절차도 검토한다. 이를 통해 이러한 밀교식 장송의례가 의례를 통해서 축적되는 공덕을 망자에게 돌림으로써 그가 보다 더 나은 재생으로 갈 수 있도록 축원하는 내용을 담고 있음을, 그리고 이를 통해 후기밀교에서 의례가 갖는 중요성의 한 측면을 살펴볼 수 있음을 논의해 보고자 한다.
Abstract
This paper examines the ritual process and its significance within the Tantric Buddhist funeral rite, as outlined in the Mṛtasugatiniyojana of Śūnyasamādhivajra, a late Vajrayāna ritual text. The text contains numerous tantric practices and ritual elements that are widely shared among Tantric traditions, such as Śaiva. It illustrates how these practices are incorporated into tantric rituals. Furthermore, these Tantric rituals, particularly those based on antyeṣṭi, mṛtoddhara, and utkrānti practices, were developed to differentiate their ritual system and establish a distinct identity from earlier Indian ritual traditions. Furthermore, this study aims to illustrate how the Vajrayāna tradition developed a Tantric ritual by elaborating on its process and meaning within a Buddhist doctrinal framework. To this end, this paper provides a nearly complete Korean translation based on the critical edition of the text by 種村隆元 (2013a). Consequently, this study examines the text to elucidate how the Vajrayāna tradition developed a Tantric funeral ritual by elaborating on its process and meaning within a Buddhist doctrinal framework. Beyond exploring interreligious connections, the text addresses specific ritual practices such as mṛtasaṃjīvanīyoga, asthyāditāḍana-vidhi, and asthyādiprakṣālana-vidhi. The author further legitimizes the mantras used in these rituals by citing their origins in the Sarvadurgatipariśodhana and Guhyasamājatantra. This study aims to demonstrate how this Tantric Buddhist funeral rite involves transferring accumulated merit through the ritual to the deceased, thereby praying for a better rebirth for them. Additionally, this study will explore the significance of ritual in Late Tantric Buddhism through this analysis.
