Abstract
Bumhae was a Buddhist monk at the Daeheung temple in the late Chosun Dynasty and entered the Buddhist priesthood with Hoeui (縞衣) and studied under Haeui Choieui. They were both trainee monks but Bumhae’s tea-enjoying habit was clearly influenced by Choeui. At the turn of the century leading up to the modern history of Korea which was marred by internal and external turmoil and the Japanese annexation of Korea, he kept the tea tradition and never lost his position as a religious trainee. He left the empirical world of teas that he experienced in the form of poems. This allows us to see the distinctive characteristics of monks who enjoyed teas around the Daeheung temple and he recorded his experiences of treating diseases with teas in poems when he got dysentery. The poem elucidated his experience in an empirical way as he painstakingly observed the changing process in body and mind after drinking tea. It can be said that the poems reflect his abstract and other empirical methods. On the other hand, he left Choeui’s tea-making methods and tea-storage methods in tea poems called “Choeui-cha”, thereby providing an important foundation to study Choeui-cha. The poem revealed Korea’s unique tea-making process that collects, cleans and re-dries teas in Ondol (Korean underfloor heating system). It is noteworthy as it is a most unique Korean tea-making method generated in the Korean culture. Furthermore, it is also significant in that “Choeui-cha” offers grounds to recover the legitimacy of Korean teas and information to produce teas that have a distinctive Korean flavor. Aside from the tea tradition in the Daeheung temple and the tea-making methods of Choeui-cha through tea poems by Bumhae, this study attempted to outline the forms and types of tea utensils used by trainee monks around the Daeheung temple in the late Chosun dynasty by examining Bumhae’s utensils.
