만암 종헌 대종사의 수증과 불교사상

Abstract

Ven. Manam played a significant role in the establishment, dharma administration, and purification of Korean Buddhism, from the Japanese occupation to the liberation of Korea. It provided the direction for the process. His alternative and innovative ideas and practices were sometimes met with resistance. However, as he considered unity to be the highest value of Buddhism, he tried to dialog and work with the other side. In addition to Buddhist historical reasons, such as the correct understanding and construction of the history of Buddhist construction and purification during the Japanese occupation and after the liberation of Korea, The research about Ven. Manam has current value for solving social problems from the perspective of conflict resolution and management in Korean society, where conflicts have intensified, and divisions have become entrenched. In this respect, his thought and practice are wisdom that we should examine today, and he should be rediscovered as a religious thinker and leader. This study utilized the materials that can confirm his activities and thoughts and related previous studies as research materials. In addition to collecting and analyzing research data, this study also summarizes the reasons and difficulties for the relative stagnation of the study of Ven. Manam. After summarizing his research status, practice and attainment, and compassion and bodhisattva practice, this study briefly summarizes his Buddhist thought. In particular, this study understands his activities from the perspective of humankind's mind. It categorizes his bodhisattva practice into bodhisattva practice in purification, bodhisattva practice in production Buddhism, and bodhisattva practice expressed in the national consciousness. In addition, the paper confirms that he established the Ganhwa Zen in Baekyangsa Temple by referring to 『Manam's collection of works』. Finally, the paper summarizes Buddhist thought from his writings.
