Abstract

In this article, I will review the devotion of Śakra Devānām Indra and the performance of practice hall of Śakra Devānām Indra during Goryeo Dynasty, as well as the ideological content of Bulseoljeseoksomungyeong(佛說帝釋所問經). In Chapter 2, we learn about the various forms of devotion of Śakra Devānām Indra during Goryeo Dynasty. In Budseolbosalseomjagyeong(佛說菩薩睒子經), the devotion of Śakra Devānām Indra is expanded to include the idea of ​​filial piety and Maitreya. As specific examples of this, the epitaph of natinal teacher Jeonggak Jigyeom(至謙) and the epitaph of natinal teacher Woneung Hakil(學一) can be mentioned. And the devotion of Śakra Devānām Indra is combined with the object of traditional faith, Hwanin(桓因), and this naturally leads to the combination of the devotion of Śakra Devānām Indra and the shamanic faith. In Chapter 3, we review related writings appearing in Donggukyisanggukjip(東國李相國集) as specific examples of practice hall and ritual of Śakra Devānām Indra, and argue that the meaning of the performance of practice hall and ritual of Śakra Devānām Indra lies in the strengthening of social solidarity, that is, the unity of the people of Goryeo. In chapter 4 we examine the ideological content of Bulseoljeseoksomungyeong(佛說帝釋所問經). This sutra is presumed to have been recited at the time of practice hall of Śakra Devānām Indra. This sutra asserts that the ultimate cause of suffering among sentient beings is delusion. The eightfold path is presented as a way to overcome this delusion, and it is also suggested to avoid three things(doubt, hope, and meaningless words). Therefore, what this sutra is trying to say is to avoid the benefits of sensual pleasure and to pursue the benefits of wise discernmen.
