Abstract
This paper focuses on the 40-fascicle Avataṃsaka Sūtra (the Zhenyuan version), an expanded recension of the Gaṇḍavyūha. In particular, the study analyzes the text's pivotal elements—Samantabhadra’s Ten Great Vows and the Verses on Rebirth—to clarify the doctrinal mechanism by which the self-power practice of Huayan Buddhism converges with the other-power soteriology of rebirth in Amitābha’s Western Pure Land. First, this study clarifies that, unlike the 60- and 80-fascicle versions of the Gaṇḍavyūha, the 40-fascicle version (貞元經, Jeong-won-gyeong) explicitly lists the Ten Great Vows. It also uniquely presents the aspiration for rebirth—following the transference of merit—in the concluding prose and verse sections as the practitioner's own personal vow. Through this, the paper proposes a ‘practice-vow (行–願) conversion mechanism.’ The difficult Avataṃsaka Bodhisattva practice (nanhaengdo) is transformed via the medium of transference of merit into the Vow King (願王, Won-wang), which functions as the driving force for salvation at the time of death. The sutra's statement that the 'Vow King' alone guides the practitioner to rebirth in an instant, when all else has perished, shows the critical link where the accumulation of self-power converts into the condition for the activation of other-power. Furthermore, a comparison with the 18th, 19th, and 20th vows from the Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtra reveals a key distinction. While Pure Land doctrine guarantees salvation based on Amitābha's Primal Vow (a pure other-power structure), the Bhadra-caryā-praṇidhāna-rāja demonstrates an interactive structure of self- and other-power. In this structure, the practitioner's merit from practice, transferred via hoeyang, functions as the actual driving force for rebirth, while Amitābha appears as the destination and the guarantor of prophecy (vyākaraṇa). This study aimed to redefine the status of Bodhisattva Samantabhadra as the embodiment of Samantabhadra's practice and a bridge mediating between the Huayan Dharma-realm and Amitābha’s Pure Land. Furthermore, it sought to elucidate pariṇāma (transfer of merit) as a doctrinal mechanism that structurally connects self-power and other-power.
