북미 한인교회의 공동체 형성과 예배와 설교의 역할에 관한 연구

기독교 신앙은 떠나라는 명령으로부터 시작되어 부르심을 입은 사람들의 모임인 공동체를 통해 형성되고 발전된다. 성삼위 하나님께서는 창조 사역을 통해 공동체를 세우시고, 그것을 확대하고 발전시킬 것을 명령하셨다. 인간의 타락 이후 십자가를 통해 공동체를 회복하셨고 초대교회는 아름다운 공동체의 모습을 세상 가운데 세워간다. 하나님은 교회를 세상을 향한 ‘대안 공동체’로 부르셨으며, 그 부르심의 여정에서 ‘하나님의 말씀’이었으며, 모든 여정은 언제나 부르신 분께 경배와 영광을 올려드리는 ‘예배’로 연결된다. 하나님의 백성들의 모임인 공동체는 그것이 가지는 실재를 깨우치고, 그것을 형성, 발전, 유지하는데 있어서 예배와 설교는 중요한 역할을 해왔다. 이러한 표식과 실재는 고국을 떠나 디아스포라 공동체로 살아가고 있는 이민교회에서 선명하게 찾아볼 수 있다. 그동안 북미의 이민교회는 이미 초기부터 한인사회에서 그 중심 역할을 해왔으며 이민역사와 애환을 함께 하면서 구심점 역할을 해왔다. 이는 종교적 측면뿐만 아니라 민족성과 고유문화의 공유와 다음 세대에 전하는 문화 창달의 측면에서 매우 중요한 역할을 해왔다. 다른 공동체에서도 그렇지만 특히 이민교회에서는 공동체를 형성하고 발전시켜 온 원동력이 예배와 설교였다. 교회는 설교와 함께 서기도 하고 무너지기도 하며, 예배는 교회의 생명의 강수를 공급해 주기 때문이다. 북미 한인교회는 한인 사회의 공동체 형성에 중요한 해 왔으며, 그것을 통해 위로, 격려, 비전과 사명을 따라 살아갈 수 있도록 역할을 해왔다. 그러한 공동체 형성에 있어서 가장 중요한 역할을 한 것이 바로 예배와 설교였다. 표본으로 정한 교회를 참여관찰방법을 통해 살펴본 바로는 하나님의 말씀의 선포인 설교와 교회의 자기표현이자 영광의 찬송인 예배를 통해 그리스도인 됨의 사명을 고취하고, 공동체의 체질의 변혁을 가져왔으며, 이민생활에서 오는 애환을 치유하고 회복하며, 서로 돕는 공동체의 모습을 이루어가는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 예배와 설교는 신앙공동체로 하여금 지속적 혁신을 통해 그 사명을 수행하도록 하는 동인이 되고 있었다. 북미한인교회가 민족공동체를 형성하여 고국을 떠나 생활하는 디아스포라 이민자들에게 조국의 문화 창달뿐만 아니라 개인의 신앙 형성과 그곳의 주류 문화에 적응하고 진출할 수 있도록 지대한 역할을 해왔지만 작금에 들어서 분열과 갈등의 양상이 적지 않음을 감안할 때 공동체 형성에 중요한 역할을 해온 예배의 설교는 분명한 방향성을 가져야 한다. 그것은 예수 중심 목회 지향성, 복음과 삶의 변혁 지향성, 디아스포라 사명 지향성, 복음의 이야기 나눔과 돌봄 사역 지향성을 견지해야 한다.
Abstract
The church is the community of God’s people gathered by God to worship and work. The Christian faith began with the calling of God and has been developed by the community of people who has been called by God. God calls it as an alternative community to the cold and barren world. The calling of God includes “imperative and promise, summons and assurance.” God speaks his powerful word directly to the people of God and they followed the Word. On the way they worshiped God―the call for building the community connected worship. The Korean American church has played an important role forming the national community in foreign lands. Historically, the Korean church in the North America has provided a wide range of support to the newly arrived immigrants. It has been immigrant centers for physical and spiritual aid to immigrants. In particular, preaching and worship has played an important role for providing vision and motivation to build a faithful community in the Korean immigrant society of North America. According to ethnograpical studies about some Korean churches we found that preaching and worship has played a central role for forming the community and finding their mission as diaspora community. They helped and influenced the renovation of the church as God’s missional community and vision for a biblically functioning community. The church as a community has reached out to some people in need as in spiritual confusion, and problems in foreign land as an immigrant and helped them properly. The Korean church in the North America should contribute to the other racial community and participate into multi-cultural settings in order to share its asserts.
