Abstract
Matthew saw the parable of the Weed as an allegory, so he added a rather labored allegorical interpretation to the parable. When we follow this, our messages generally will be focused on the final judgment in which humanity will be divided into good and evil people. Those messages reflects the concern of a young Christian community to define itself over against an evil world, a concern not characteristic of Jesus. Jesus was not an allegorist, though his followers frequently have been. Through the householder's mouth, Jesus said "let both grow together." Letting the wheat and weeds grow up together suggests a coexistence under God's mercy rather than a division by the judgment. In this article, we will try to find a way how to bypass allegorization and refuse to divide humanity into good and evil people. Instead we will try to help our congregations to consider the ambiguity of good and evil. For this purpose, we will try to see this parable through a Jungian perspective. In this perspective, the biblical symbols or parables are in nature dominated by opposites, such as light and darkness, good and evil. Jung argued that if we identify ourselves so completely with the light, we lose touch with our own darkness. Then we fail to deal with our own shadow, and project it onto others. Applying these Jungian perspectives we will try to find messages of the parable for sermon. We will examine one sermon as an example and comment it. With these messages, preachers may warn against making moral judgment, a practice that inevitably leads to self-righteousness. Instead they will try to help congregations to live together in God's Mercy, forgiving one another and blessing one another.
