임상심리학적 공감 개념과 공감의 신학적 의미

초록

공감이란 단어는 대중적으로 여러 가지 형태로 사용되고 있지만, 임상심리학에서 중점적으로 연구된 단어이다. 이 연구는 공감을 심리치료의 주요한 요인으로 처음 발전시킨 칼 로저스(Carl Rogers)와 자기심리학자 하인츠 코헛(Heinz Kohut)과 상호주관성 정신분석 이론을 발전시킨 로버트 스톨로로우(Robert D. Stolorow)의 공감 개념을 분석하여 심리치료에서 발전된 공감 개념의 내용과 적용 방식을 규명한다. 로저스와 코헛과 스톨로로우는 공감을 다른 사람의 내면세계, 내적 준거틀을 이해하는 것으로 정의했다는 점에선 일치한다. 하지만 로저스는 무의식이나 심리적 역동보다는 ‘지금 여기서’의 내담자의 상황과 처지와 관심과 질문에 일치성과 투명성을 유지하며 대응하는 인격적 관계의 질을 강조하는 반면, 코헛과 스톨로로우는 정신분석학 이론에 기초하여 시행착오적이며 장기간의 탐구요 내담자의 상태와 치유 방법을 소통하는 설명의 차원을 포함한다. 스톨로로우는 코헛보다 철저히 관계적이고 상호주관적인 정황을 부각시키고, 심리치료에서 공감과 내성을 통해 상담가와 내담자 양자의 상호작용을 탐구해야 한다고 주장한다. 또한 이 연구는 헌징거의 칼케돈 모델을 이용하여 임상심리학적 공감 개념의 신학적 차원을 고찰했다. 이를 위해 공감 개념을 임상심리학에서 모든 인간관계로 더욱 확대하여 공감의 신학적 의미를 규명하고, 공감은 삼위일체 하나님의 상호 순환·내주·내재, 하나님의 형상으로서의 관계적 인간, 그리스도의 케노시스와 공감적 사역, 공감을 돕는 성령의 활동, 사랑의 전제로 이해할 수 있다고 제시한다. 이렇게 임상심리학적이며 신학적으로 성찰된 공감의 이론과 실제는 목회돌봄과 상담에서 실질적인 도움을 주리라 기대한다. 공감이 내성과 짝을 이룬다면, 삼위일체 하나님의 은혜로 자신과 상대방의 깊은 마음을 이해하려고 노력할 때, 하나님의 사랑과 은혜를 온전하게 전하는 사역자가 될 수 있을 것이다.

Abstract

Although the word ‘empathy’ becomes popular and commonly employed in various contexts, it has been one of the main themes of research in the field of clinical psychology. This study elucidates what constitutes the concept of empathy and how it is to be utilized in psychotherapy by analyzing the theories and practices of empathy developed by the three representative clinicians: (1) Carl Rogers who was the first to emphasize empathy as one of major factors in psychotherapy; (2) Heinz Kohut, the founder of the self-pyschology; (3) Robert Stolorow who presents a theory of empathy from the perspective of intersubjectivity and phenomenological contextuality. Rogers, Kohut and Stolorow are the same in that they define empathy as understanding the inner world and frame of reference of the other. There are, however, some differences in their theoretical orientations in formulating empathy. Rogers highlights the quality of the interpersonal relationship between the therapist and the client for maintaining the consistency and transparency in responding to the situation, context, interests, and questions of the client ‘here and now’ rather than unconsciousness and psychological dynamics. In contrast, Kohut and Stolorow present empathy as a way of long-term and trial-and-error investigation into the inner world of the client on the basis of psychoanalytic theories as well as explaining and communicating the psychological state of the client and therapeutic methods. Stolorow consistently brings the context of intersubjectivity to the fore, insisting on exploring the interactions between the therapist and the client through empathy and introspection. One of goals of this study is to reflect theological meanings of empathy as the clinical psychological concept by using the Chalcedonian model developed by Deborah van Deusen Hunsinger. For this it expands the concept of empathy from clinical psychology to every human relation, especially personal relationship, and illuminates its theological dimensions. It demonstrates that empathy can be understood in terms of mutual perichoresis, indwelling, and immanence of the Trinity, the relational human beings as the image of the Trinitarian God, kenosis of Christ and his empathic ministry, the works of the Holy Spirit aiding our empathy, and the prerequisite of love. When the concept of empathy is clearly understood both clinically and theologically, it is to be expected that it will provide pastoral carers and counselors with greater theoretical and practical competency. They will become ministers who fully communicate and transmit divine love and grace in their efforts to understand the deep dimension of mind of their own and the others through grace of the Trinitarian God by empathy paired with introspection.
