기독교 복음 안에는 구원과 관계된 여러 개념과 단계들이 있는데, 그 중 대표적으로 꼽을 수 있는 것이 중생(new birth)과 성화(santification)일 것이다. 전통적으로는 중생이나 성화가 성례전을 통해서 얻게 되는 은총이라고 인식되었으나, 근대 개신교에서는 성례전의 개념이 약화되고 회개, 기도, 말씀 등 개인적 경건이 이러한 은총을 받는 실제적인 방법이라고 인식되었다. 예컨대 교회에서 베푸는 공적인 물세례보다는 열심히 기도하고 말씀 들을 때 ‘성령세례’를 받게 되며, 이것이 실질적인 구원의 은총을 가져다준다고 믿는 것이다. 이러한 기류의 중심에는 성령운동을 강조하는 복음주의 계열의 교회들이 있는데, 대표적으로는 기독교대한성결교회와 기독교대한하나님의성회를 들 수 있다. 이 교회들의 구원론의 핵심은 소위 ‘사중복음’(Four-fold Gospel)으로 표현된다. 사중복음은 중생, 성결, 신유, 재림 이렇게 기독교 복음의 네 가지 요소를 강조하는 것으로서, 성결교회는 이 네 가지를, 오순절교회는 여기에 ‘축복’을 더한 ‘오중복음’을 자신들의 교리적 정체성으로 주장한다. 문제는 사중복음이나 오중복음을 강조할수록 초대교회로부터 인식되어 왔으며 범 기독교적으로 정체성으로 인정받는 성례전에 대한 오해를 불러일으키고 성례전을 등한시 하게 된다는 사실이다. 사실 따지고 보면 기독교 고유의 성례전인 세례나 성찬 안에 사중복음이나 오중복음의 요소가 이미 포함되어 있다고 볼 수 있다. 본 논문은 이러한 문제점을 인식하여 기독교 성례전 중의 하나인 세례예전 속에 사중복음적 요소들이 모두 들어있음을 밝혀내려는 목적에서 집필되었다. 성서와 초기 기독교의 세례예전을 조사해보면 중생과 성결과 신유와 재림이라는 사중복음이 각각 나누어진 별개의 은총이 아니라 세례 속에 모두 들어있는 것을 알 수 있다. 따라서 현대교회가 세례를 그저 하나의 요식적인 행위가 아니라 세례의 성례전적 차원을 재인식하고 성서와 초대교회의 정신과 실천을 따라 지금보다 더 비중있게 신학적 의미를 되살려 시행한다면 분명 세례의 과정에서 수세자는 사중복음의 네 가지 은총을 경험할 수 있게 될 것이다.
Abstract
Among various stages related to the salvation of the Christian Gospel, ‘re-born’ and ‘santification’ could be noted as the most important ones. According to the traditional understanding, re-born and santification are the graces which can be acquired through the sacraments. However, modern protestant churches tends to understand that believers acquire these graces through personal devotion such as repentance, prayer, and listening to the Word. This idea downgrades the importance of the sacrament. In this reason, believers practice water baptism as a meaningless business while practicing prayer and listening to the word with enthusiasm because they believe this kind of devotion bring them ‘spirit-baptism’ which means a real grace of salvation. Evangelical Churches which emphasize holiness movement such as The Korea Evangelical Holiness Church and The Full Gospel Church of Korea represent this tendency. Core soteriology of these churches can be expressed as ‘Four-fold Gospel’ which includes re-born, sanctification, healing, and the second coming. The Korea Evangelical Church takes four-fold Gospel, and The Full Gospel Church of Korea takes five-fold Gospel as their dogmatic identity. Five-fold Gospel has one more item ‘blessing’ over the four-fold Gospel. However, we are facing with a problem that the more we stress the four-fold Gospel the more we recede from the traditional mainline churches’ concept of the sacrament. This Essay was written for the purpose to prove that there already exists four-fold Gospel within the sacrament of baptism. Re-birth and sanctification are not separated into two individual steps but an unified one in the process of baptism. Bible and the Early Christianity testify that each grace of the four-fold Gospel are integrated within the process of Christian initiation. Therefore, when we have a new understanding about the baptism in the bible and the early church, we can experience the graces of the four-fold Gospel when we are baptized.
