증언의 관점에서 본 설교에 대한 신학적 이해: 토마스 롱의 설교 신학적 이해를 중심으로

기독교 설교는 본질적으로 신학적 차원과 수행적 차원을 중심으로 이루어지는 사역이다. 전자가 설교 사역이 무엇인지에 대해 규명한다면 후자는 그러한 신학적 바탕 위에서 어떻게 수행할 것인지를 규정한다. 포스트모던 상황과 후기 기독교 사회는 설교 사역에 있어서 이러한 차원에 대한 재고를 촉구한다. 즉 메시지 전달의 방법에 대해서 뿐만 아니라 설교에 대한 신학적 이해에 대한 재고를 촉구한다. 그동안 현대설교신학 진영에도 이러한 시도가 계속 이어졌다. 문화 사회적 상황과 의식의 변화는 포스트모던 상황이 되면서 설교학의 진영에도 패러다임의 변화뿐만 아니라 설교에 대한 급격한 신학적, 형태론적, 인식론적 변화를 가져왔다. 지배적이던 기존의 이해에서 과감하게 탈피(exiting)하면서 전혀 새로운 것을 추구하게 되었다. 이렇게 변화하는 시대 가운데서 설교 사역을 바로, 더 효과적으로 감당하기 위해서는 그 사역에 대한 인식과 수행의 차원에 있어서의 새로운 이해가 필요하다. 하나님의 신비를 이 땅에 활짝 펼친다는 점에서 영광스러운 사역인 설교는 효과적인 말씀 전달을 위해 인식론적 이해는 계속 변화되어 온 것이 사실이다. 설교는 다른 인간 강화(discourse)와 달리 독특한 신학적 의미를 가지며, 그 의미를 따라 수행할 때 바른 사역이 된다. 기독교 설교는 “성 삼위 하나님의 주도권과 현존 가운데서(in), 그것과 함께(with), 그것을 통하여(through) 수행되는” 실천적 특징을 가진다. 설교가 가지는 신학적, 수행적 특징에 대한 인식은 계속 발전, 확대되어 온 것이 사실인데, 토마스 롱은 설교자의 이미지를 나타내는 메타포를 통해 근대 이후 설교의 역사 가운데서 등장하는 신학적 이해의 변천을 설명하면서 설교에 대한 가장 오래된 신학적 이해 중의 하나인 ‘증언’을 통하여 이러한 차원을 설명한다. 롱에 따르면 증언의 메타포는 설교에 있어서 스피치와 행함에 있어 통전적 약속(engagement)을 제공해 주며, 새로운 관점에서 설교자의 권위를 담보해 준다. 증언으로서의 설교는 성경에서 그가 보고 들은 것을 말하고 그가 믿는 것을 고백하기 위해서 “사건의 이야기화와 믿음의 고백”을 필요로 한다. 본고는 토마스 롱이 제시한 증언으로서의 설교를 신학적, 수행적 차원에서 살펴보면서, 오늘의 시대에서 설교 사역을 수행함에 있어 가져야 할 신학적 통찰과 특성을 살펴보는데 그 주안점이 있다.
Abstract
Christian preaching has been understood by theological and practical dimensions. As the former reveals what preaching is, the latter is related with how to practice it in the theological understanding. Contemporary socio-cultural context asks a new understanding and rethinking of preaching in both dimensions. In the postmodern context, in particular, preaching is “leaving itself in order to find itself” and the preacher has to consider deeply “something of the nature of proclamation at its deepest levels.” Since the mid 20th century, contemporary homiletic camps have tried to rethink the theological understanding and practice of preaching that pursued the homiletical paradigm shift. They have suggested a new theological, practical, and epistemological understandings of preaching. Thomas G. Long, Bandy Professor Emeritus of Preaching in Emory University Candler School of Theology, suggests another perspective of preaching through the witness metaphor. Even though the image of witness for the preacher is not a new idea, but the oldest one in the Bible. According to Long, it provides a total engagement of speech and action in preaching. He insists that the metaphor emphasizes the authority of the preacher in a new perspective, which embodies the way of approaching the Bible, audience and rhetorical form of preaching. Preaching as the witness needs “a narration of events and a confession of belief” in order to tell what he/she has seen and heard and to confess what he/she believes. The main concern of this article is to survey the theological and practical meanings of preaching that the metaphor of witness suggested by Thomas G. Long, and to suggest theological and practical insights for preaching in the pluralistic and postmodern context.
