13세기 후반과 4세기 초반의 인물인 마이스터 엑카르트는 현대에 새롭게 조명되고 있다. 그의 신학이 갖는 부정신학적 요소가 생태학적 측면에서 새롭게 조명되고 있다. 구체적인 예로, 매튜 폭스는 엑카르트을 사상적 토대로 그의 창조 영성신학을 전개하고 있다. 특별히 엑카르트 영성 사상을 4개의 영적 여정으로 세분하여 이해하고 있다: 긍정의 길, 부정의 길, 창조의 길, 변형의 길. 본 논문은 앞의 두 여정을 중심적으로 다루고 있다. 앞의 두 영적 여정은 3-4번째 영적 여정인 창조와 변형의 길의 전제 조건인 동시에 방법론이 된다. 엑카르트의 영성 사상은 기본적으로 이 세상의 피조물을 긍정적으로 바라본다. 하나님은 말씀으로 이 세계를 창조하신 후 “하나님 보시기에 좋았다”(창 1: 21, 25, 31)고 하셨다. 엑카르트는 “만물이 그에게서 나고, 그로 말미암아 있고, 그를 위하여 있습니다.”(롬 11:36)고 고백할 수 있었다. 하나님은 만물 속에 내재해 계신다. 하나님이 자신에게 가까이 계시다는 것을 깨달아 알면 알수록 행복한 영혼이 될 것이다. 엑카르트는 창조계의 선함을 이야기하지만, 인간이 피조세계를 인식하고 상호교류하는 길이 단절되어 있음을 알고 있다. 그는 이의 극복을 위해 초탈(detachment, Abgeschiedenheit)을 강조한다. 그래서 인간에게 덧씌워진 모든 것을 벗어버리고 탈피하는 초탈의 수행이 요청된다. 엑카르트는 이를 가난(poverty, Armut)으로 표현한다. 곧, 모든 것을 거추장스러운 옷과 같은 것으로 생각, 이미지, 감정 등을 벗어버려야 한다. 심지어 자신이 알고 있는 하나님에 대한 생각까지도 벗어나야 한다. 이를 통해 영혼은 내면이 비워지며 무(無)가 된다. 이렇게 될 수 있는 것은 하나님과 영혼이 둘이 아니라 ‘하나’란 사실에 있음을 엑카르트는 강조한다. 이렇게 영혼의 근저에서 영혼과 하나님이 하나 되는 곳에서 하나님의 아들이 탄생하게 되는 것이다.
Abstract
Meister Eckhart, who lived in the thirteenth to fourteenth century, has been reviewed freshly in our time. The apophatic dimension in his thought is seen in a new perspective. Matthew Fox develops his theology of creation spirituality on the basis of Meister Eckhart. Fox summarizes Eckhart's thought in the four spiritual paths: via positiva, via negativa, via creativa, and via transformativa. This paper mainly deals with the first two, since the third and fourth paths are based upon the first two. Basically Eckhart's spiritual thought sees creation in a positive light. God creates the world by the Word and sees all that has been created as good (Gen 1: 21, 25, 31). Thus, Eckhart was able to confess that "For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things" (Rom 11:36). God is present in all things. Eckhart insists that the more the soul experiences the closeness of God, the happier s/he becomes. Though Eckhart recognizes that creation is good, he also knows that humans are cut off from the path of communication with and awareness of the world of creation. Thus he emphasizes detachment (Abgeschiedenheit) as a way to overcome this alienation. He proposes the practice of detachment as a way of letting go of things that cling to humans. Eckhart calls the practice of detachment poverty (Armut). Like taking of clothes that cling to our bodies, we need to let go of all such things as thoughts, images and feelings. Through this the soul becomes interiorly empty. This is possible, Eckhart reminds us, because God and the soul are not two, but "one." In this way at the ground of the soul, where the soul and God are one, the son of God is born.
