기독청소년을 위한 커리큘럼으로서 웨스트민스터 소요리문답에 관한 연구

교회 학교 경우 학년이 올라갈수록 학생들이 교회를 떠나는 것은 신앙적 기초를 제대로 세워주지 못해서 즉, 우리의 좋은 유산을 활용할 생각은 안하고 너무 학생들에 요구에 기초한 새로운 가르침만을 추구한 결과는 아닐까 뒤돌아보자! 가톨릭은 영세를 받을 때 교리공부를 육 개월 가량 시킨다고 한다. 절대적은 아니지만 가톨릭 신자가 기독교 신자보다 교회를 덜 떠나는 것은 교리공부에도 있다는 것을 참고해야 한다. 우리가 가지고 있는 Westminster 소요리문답을 어떻게 가르칠 것인가를 고민해야 한다. “교회는 초문화적이고 초시간적이다. 그러나 교회가 가지고 있는 제도들은 아니다. 어느 주어진 시기에 그리고 어느 주어진 문화에서, 교회는 그것의 보편적이고 영구적인 임무를 이루기 위해서 약간의 행위들, 프로그램들, 그리고 기술들(기관들)을 산출한다. 이러한 제도들은 그 자체로서는 결코 목적이 될 수 없다.” 이렇듯이 교회가 가지고 있는 우리의 전통과 유산에 얼마든지 21세기의 옷을 입힐 수 있는 것이다. Westminster 소요리문답 역시 내용의 훼손됨 없이 재구성 될 수 있고 문답식 아닌 다른 방법으로 청소년들에게 가르쳐질 수 있다. 하지만 한국교회 현실을 보면, 문답식으로 되어있는 Westminster 소요리문답이 우리의 우수한 신앙적 유산임을 깨닫지 못하고 시대에 뒤떨어진 것으로 치부하고 있다. 때문에 필자는 현재 청소년들에게 가르쳐지고 있는 커리큘럼이 기독교교육의 기능과 목적에 맞는지를 검토할 것이다. 그리고 신앙교육에 있어서 교리가 필요한지를 질문할 것이고, 영 커리큘럼으로써 Westminster 소요리문답의 중요성을 강조할 것이며, 꼭 가르쳐야 한다는 제시를 할 것이다. 물론 내용의 훼손됨 없이 우리 청소년들에게 익숙하고 새로운 방법으로 가르쳐야 한다는 것은 기본적인 것이다. 마음의 변화와 성경에 기초한 회심을 가져올 우리 것을 전수하며 소중히 여기며, 그 틀을 가지고 청소년들이 새로운 것을 배우도록 최선을 다 할 때 한국교회의 미래는 희망이 있을 것이다.
Abstract
Students often leave the church as they get older because they are not able to form firm religious foundations. Instead of utilizing our invaluable inheritance, we have pursued new teaching methods based only on the demands of the students. Before catholics are baptized, they undergo six months of catechism study. The fact that catholics attend church less often than christians on average can also be attributable to this fact. We as christians also need to think about how we can teach our Westminster catechism more effectively. The church is above culture and time, but its institutions are not. The church takes certain actions and produces programs and institutions to achieve a general and permanent role during certain periods and in certain cultures. These institutions, however, cannot be goals in themselves. We need to apply the church's tradition and inheritance in the 21st century to educate and impact youth in a positive way. For example, we could teach students the Westminster shorter catechism using a more engaging method other than the traditional question and answer format without damaging its contents. In the contemporary Korean church, we often fail to recognize the Westminster shorter catechism as an invaluable religious inheritance and consider it only as a relic of a bygone era. As a result, we need to review the current curriculum to understand if it meets the function and need of christian education. Here we first question the need for catechism in the contemporary christian church, then emphasize the importance of the Westminster shorter catechism and suggest its necessity in the new curriculum. We need to adopt a new student-friendly method of teaching the Westminster small catechism without compromising its original content. The future of the Korean church will be bright so long as we can fully appreciate our religious traditions that have the ability to change hearts and help us to focus on biblical teachings and pass them on to the next generation.
