Abstract

Music is organically related to worship because both have following common characteristics. First, both music and worship have a character of 'mystery.' Second, music and worship are both related to human emotion and feeling. Third, music and worship commonly utilize human creativity. Fourth, music is similar to human language because music, as human language, is a form of communication. Music has common character as well as difference from speech. The former is that they both depend on human sense, and the latter is that speech appeals to human intelligence directly, while music appeals to human emotion and feeling directly and quickly. These differences shows that music and speech have different inclination. The terms indicating music used in Christian worship are various and each of them has its own meaning and category. The term 'Church music,' used most popularly presently, has limitation in that it does not include the music of Eastern churches and the Jewish music. 'Religious music,' though overcome the limitation of the term 'Church music,' has a weak point in that it does include music of other religions such as Buddhism or Hinduism. The term 'sacred music' is can be located in the same line with the term 'religious music,' and the term 'pastoral music' is too broad because it include the music outside of worship. The term 'ritual music' is still ambiguous because the term 'ritual' includes the rituals of other religions as well as Christian's. The term 'Christian ritual music' cleary defines the category of 'Christian' 'ritual' 'music,' and overcome the limitation of the term 'ritual music,' but this term is used rarely. Considering these, the term 'liturgical music' will be most appropriate term. The purpose of the liturgical music is completely same with that of the liturgy. To make it short, liturgical music has seven purposes: glorifying God and sanctifying believers, reinforcing celebrity in performing liturgy, strengthening the proclamation of the Word, building up the solidarity of the community, promoting the participation of the congregation, fortifying the cultural and artistic goodness.
