이 글은 초대교회 예루살렘에서 행해진 세례예식에 대한 연구이다. 초대교회의 다양한 세례예식들 중에서 씨릴의 세례가 주목받는 것은 사람들이 예루살렘에 대해 갖는 상징적 의미 때문이다. 기독교인들에게 예루살렘은 그리스도가 직접 걷고 사역을 행하시며 십자가의 구속의 사건이 일어난 역사적 증언의 도시이며, 부활하신 그리스도를 증언해주는 희망의 도시이다. 그러기에 일찍부터 많은 순례객들이 예루살렘을 찾았으며 여기서 보고 들은 것을 자신의 고향에서도 하고 싶은 열망이 있었다. 따라서 예루살렘의 예배 형태와 예식 순서들은 빨리 전파되는 경향이 강했다. 에제리아 수녀 역시 이러한 순례객 중 한사람이었다. 380년경에 기록한 것으로 알려진 에제리아의 『여행기』는 씨릴 감독의 저술들과 더불어 이 글에 중요한 일차적 자료를 제공한다. 이 자료들의 증언에 따라 이 글은 예루살렘교회에서 행한 세례후보자 신앙교육과 부활절 세례에 관해 정리하고 소개하는 것이 일차적 목적이다. 초대교회에 있어서 세례는 근본적으로 교회가 존재하는 방식이며, 교회가 살아가는 방식이었다. 세례를 받고자 신청하는 많은 이방인 개종자들뿐만 아니라 기존 교인들에게도 세례준비교육은 기독교인으로서 존재하는 방식이면서, 기독교인으로서 살아가는 방식이라 할 수 있기 때문이다. 씨릴이 자신의 교회를 위해 힘써 실천한 목회, 세례예식을 통한 그의 실천적 노력을 보며 오늘 우리에게 시사하는 바를 찾고자 한다.
Abstract
This paper presents the baptismal liturgy of Jerusalem in the Early Church. Jerusalem is not only “a historic city of witness,” where Christ walked, worked, and died, but also “a hopeful city of parousia,” where Christ will come again. The Christianized city, Jerusalem, attracted lots of pilgrims, by whom the liturgy of Jerusalem spread out rapidly and effectively. They were willing to apply what they saw in Jerusalem to their home town. Egeria was also a pilgrim who visited Jerusalem in the fourth century. She wrote a diary in 380s, which provides precious information regarding church life of Jerusalem, specifically the baptismal liturgy. Along with Egeria’s witness, writings of Cyril of Jerusalem are essential resources to lead us to the liturgy of baptism in Jerusalem. According to these evidences, Jerusalem church practiced the Lenten catechesis and Easter baptism. I research these themes first, then observe the baptismal ethos of Cyril of Jerusalem: baptism is the way the church is, the way the church lives; baptismal life is the way a Christian is, the way a Christian lives. By examining the baptismal catechesis and the baptismal liturgy, I seek to find an insightful message for today, especially for our baptismal practice and theology.
