초록

Pine forests are commonly found in coastal dunefields along the western coast of South Korea. These forests can disturb sand dune systems by activities involved in planting itself, and by affecting nutrient conditions in dune soils. However, it is still not clear how such forests can change dune soil characteristics. Thus, planting trees are still regarded as a good policy to stabilize the landscapes and protect the residential area from strong winds and salt spray. This study was performed to reveal the effect of planting trees on soil nutrients in coastal dunes. The soil samples were collected from six dunes distributed along the western coast of Chungnam Province, including grass-covered area and tree-covered area, and were chemically and physically analyzed. These two areas show significant differences in silt proportion, organic matter contents, and concentrations of key cation and anion nutrients such as Na+, Cl_, NO3_, PO43_, and SO42_. As the soil nutrient changes affect the distribution and structures of dune vegetation, such afforestation should be restricted in the coastal dunes.
