사별의 슬픔에 대한 현상학적 이해와 신앙공동체를 통한 목회 돌봄과 상담- 크리스천 사별여성들의 경험을 바탕으로 -

사랑하는 사람의 죽음, 그리고 그 죽음 앞에서 사람은 어떤 반응을 보이는가? 죽음의 모습이 다양하듯 사랑하는 이를 먼저 떠나보낸 이들이 보이는 모습 또한 다양하다. 본 논문은 죽음과 상실에 대한 상담적, 목회신학적 성찰을 목적으로 한다. 특히 배우자를 먼저 떠나보내고 홀로 남겨진 이들이 겪게 되는 신체적, 심리적, 정서적, 사회적, 영적 고통에 대해 관심을 가지면서 이들을 위한 목회 돌봄과 상담에 대해 고민해 보았다. 죽음과 슬픔에 대한 많은 목회신학적 논의들이 있어 왔다. 그러나 상실과 죽음에 대한 심리학적이고 사회학적인 논의는 많이 있어 왔지만, 이에 대한 목회적, 영적 대응에 대한 연구는 상대적으로 적었다. 본 논문은 상실을 경험한 이들에게 필요한 목회상담적, 교회적(공동체적), 영적 지원과 접근법에 대해 다룸으로써 목회신학자, 목회상담자뿐만 아니라 목회자 및 평신도사역자들이 사별에 따른 슬픔을 가진 사람들을 슬기롭게 도울 수 있는 통찰을 제공해 보았다. 본 논문의 주제는 사별을 경험한 이들에게 신앙공동체는 돌봄과 상담을 제공하는 최적의 장소가 되어야 한다는 것이다. 슬픔을 당한 사별자들에게 신앙공동체가 어떤 의미로 다가오며, 어떻게 구체적인 도움을 줄 수 있는지 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 22명의 사별여성들을 대상으로 21개의 객관식 질문, 1개의 단답형 질문, 그리고 6개 서술형 질문 등을 통해 사별의 슬픔에 대한 현상학적 이해를 시도해 보았다. 설문조사를 통해 신앙생활이 슬픔 극복에 큰 도움을 주었으며, 신앙생활을 오래할수록 사별이후 삶의 변화가 적었고, 신앙공동체가 중요한 지원을 제공하고 있음을 알게 되었다. 반면에 사별의 과정에서 교회 및 목회자의 관심과 사랑이 턱없이 부족하고, 상담과 같은 전문적인 도움을 별로 받지 못하고 있으며, 신앙공동체가 사별자들을 차별하고 편견을 갖고 대하는 등 부정적인 역할을 하고 있음도 발견하였다. 사별자들은 사별자모임을 통해 가장 큰 위로와 도움을 제공받는다고 느끼고 있으며, 신앙공동체가 사별자들을 배려하고 전문적인 돌봄과 상담을 제공해 줄 것을 요청하였다. 본 논문은 사별자들에게 최선의 목회 돌봄을 제공하기 위해서 교회공동체는 사별자들을 위한 “전인적 관계망”(wholeness network)을 구축해야 하며, 최근의 사별 상담과 이론—사별의 애도 과정과 슬픔 경험에 대한 개별성 인정, 애도과업에 대한 비판적 재해석, 사별 이후 고인과의 지속적인 유대관계의 필요성 인식, 사별자가 속한 문화에 대한 배려와 이해—을 충분히 고려한 최적의 돌봄과 상담을 제공해야 함을 주장하였다.
Abstract
One of the most challenging issues in the contemporary pastoral theological literature is grief and loss in human life, especially as it relates to death. Particularly important is the phenomenon of bereavement: the loss of a spouse. This paper explores the grief experiences of Christian women from a pastoral theological perspective. We survey 22 bereaved Christian women to examine the role of the faith community in the grief process, using a questionnaire with a qualitative narrative component and a quantitative component based on a five-level Likert-type scale to quantify the roles of the various subsections of the faith community in assisting the griever. We find that religious life aids grief recovery, with more extensive religious backgrounds correlating with lessened grief, and that bereaved women often receive the most support from their faith communities. We find also that bereaved women frequently find pastoral support lacking, that few such women seek professional help, and that the faith community may also have a profoundly negative role for the griever, with several women reporting feelings of isolation. We conclude that bereavement-specific faith communities—those designed with the bereaved in mind—are often the most effective means of aiding grievers, and that the primary role of the faith community should be that of a support system to link grievers to grief counseling should the need arise. We also draw from phenomenological research on the subject to articulate the value of the faith community as a wholeness network for the griever. We suggest the importance of applying current trends in grief counseling, such as the recognition of the particularity of the griever, of the limitations of grief-work, of the continuation of relationships with the deceased, and of the influence of culture on the griever.
