Abstract

This thesis will explore the spiritual training in the life of Antonius, an Egyptian Desert Father, who is also known as the Father of All Monks. The study of Antonius’s spiritual training was regarded as the prototype of the early Christian spiritual life. The purpose of this thesis is to clarify the meaning of this spiritual training through systematic analysis and classification of the spiritual training in “The Life of Anthony” Antonius’s spiritual life is, firstly, a reclusive life that allowed him to meet God and the world alone. Antonius discovered who he truly was through “being alone”. While being alone, he experienced the temptations of Satan and the world. However, he resisted all temptations and found out who he truly was through “being alone”. Secondly, Antonius practised consciousness examen which is the practice of looking at your inner self. Consciousness examen is a discipline that allows one to recognize how the Spirit of God moves and rests in our lives. Antonius’s spiritual training is now appearing in the form of the the “Jesus Companion Diary” in the Korean church. Thirdly, Antonius emphasises on the importance of discernment and teaches more specifically about it than any other Desert Fathers. Discernment is the ability to judge correctly by separating from others. Antonius reveals not only the activities of the good and evil spirits but also the type and characteristic of spirits. He teaches that the problems of church and society, that is, everything in human history, is in the realm of discernment. With Covid19, the era of uncontact has come. How should the Korean church live a spiritual life in the age of uncontact? Shouldn’t we find a way in this spiritual training that Antonius sought in the Bible?
