설교가 하나님의 현존을 계시하시는 통로라는 것은 초대교회부터 지켜온 신학적 고백이다. 특별히 기록된 말씀으로서 성서와 선포된 말씀 사이의 연속성을 강조하는 개혁교회 전통에서 설교에서 하나님의 말씀이 경험되는 방식은 텍스트의 지적 이해라는 측면에 치중되어 있다. 그러나 이는 모리스 메를로-퐁티를 비롯한 일군의 학자들이 지적한 바와 같이 텍스트를 비롯한 세계를 지각하는 주체는 신체를 가진 인간이며 인간의 세계 내 지각은 신체를 기반으로 하고 있음을 간과하고 있다. 이 논문은 이러한 반성에 기초하여 설교가 성서 본문의 문자적 의미를 이해하는 것이나 문학적 상상력을 통해 성서를 이해하는 것을 넘어서 신체를 매개로 한 수행미학적 경험이라는 점을 부각하고자 한다. 먼저 메를로-퐁티의 신체에 관한 현상학적 이해를 살핀 후에, 메를로-퐁티의 신체적 인식론을 발전시킨 체화된 인지 이론에서 주장하는 신체를 통한 인식과정을 고찰한다. 이러한 토대 위에, 개인의 신체를 통한 지식이 공동체의 사회적 틀 안에서 사회적 기억으로 변증법적인 상호검증을 통해 형성되는 과정을 논의한 사회적 기억 이론을 토대로 필자는 이러한 인간의 신체미학적 경험의 역동을 탐구하고자 한다. 더 나아가 이러한 논의를 찰스 바토우 및 자나 칠더스 등 퍼포먼스 설교학자들이 제시하는 신체적 퍼포먼스를 통한 말씀 사건 구성이라는 이해와 접목하여 설교에서 발생하는 하나님의 현존 체험이 근본적으로 체화된 경험임을 주장하고자 한다. 이러한 연구가 설교를 단순히 성서 본문의 의미를 지적으로 이해하는 작업을 넘어서 성서가 증언하는 하나님을 신체를 통해 살아있는 말씀으로 경험하는 수행적 사건으로 이해할 수 있도록 돕길 기대한다.
Abstract
Since the early Church, most churches have confessed that preaching is a channel that reveals the presence of God. In particular, for those who stand in the Reformed tradition, which has emphasized the continuity between the Scripture as the written Word and preaching as the proclaimed Word, the way in which one experiences God's presence in preaching tends to be described as an intellectual experience. However, such an understanding misses what a group of scholars, including Maurice Merleau-Ponty, points out; it is that the subject who perceives the world, including the text, is the human in body and that the human perception in the world is based on the body. Based on this reflection, this paper attempts to highlight the overlooked truth that preaching is not only to understand the literal sense of the scriptural texts and interpret it by use of literary imagination but also to construct a performative aesthetic experience that is mediated through the body. To describe how such a somatic aesthetic experience becomes constructed, the author discusses Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology of body, the embodied cognition theory, which developed the somatic epistemology by Merleau-Ponty, and the social memory theory, which investigates the dialectical process that forms an individual's embodied knowledge into social memory in light of social framework. Applying these theoretical discussions to the performance homiletical theory presented by Charles Bartow, Jana Childers, and other scholars, which supports the performative Word-event through bodily performance, the author claims that the experience of the divine presence in preaching is essentially embodied. I hope this study will help to understand preaching as a performative event in which experience the divine presence, witnessed in the world of the Scripture, in and through the body, rather than simply an intellectual understanding of textual meanings of the Scripture.
