잔느 귀용의 하나님 체험과 인격변형에 관한 고찰 - 도널드 위니캇의 이론을 중심으로 -

성서 창세기에는 하나님께서 태초에 인간(Adam, 아담)을 창조하시어 하나님의 영을 불어넣으셨고, 인간에게 생육하고 번성하여 땅에 충만하고 땅과 바다와 하늘의 모든 것을 다스릴 능력을 주셨다고 기록되어 있다. 이 말씀은 하나님께서 인간을 안전하게 돌보시고, 인간에게 창조적인 삶을 살아갈 수 있도록 능력을 부여해 주신다는 하나님의 언약이며, 심리학적으로 본다면 대상관계 이론가 도널드 위니캇(Donald Woods Winnicott)의 ‘홀로 있을 수 있는 능력’에 관한 내용이라고 볼 수 있다. 위니캇의 이론은 하나님 체험을 분석하고 이해하기 위해 자주 사용되는데, 그는 인간이 삶을 건설적이고 창조적으로 살아가기 위해서는 ‘홀로 있을 수 있는 능력’이 있어야 한다고 했다. 한편, 정신분석학자 멜라니 클라인 (Melanie Klein)은 ‘홀로 있을 수 있는 능력’은 개인의 내면 안에 좋은 대상이 존재함을 의미한다고 했으며, 김홍근은 ‘홀로 있을 수 있는 능력’에 대하여 ‘임마누엘의 믿음’과 같다고 했다. 그런데 만약 한 개인의 생애 초기 유아기에 어떠한 문제가 발생 되면 이런 언약의 축복을 누리지 못한 채 살아간다. 이런 경우 그는 이유나 원인을 모르는 채 늘 세상과 동떨어진 고립된 정신세계 안에 갇혀있게 된다. 그에게 삶은 무미건조하고, 세상과 어울려 살아가려고 시도할 때마다 되돌아오는 좌절과 상처로 인해 결국 세상으로부터 단절되곤 한다. 혹은 포장된 거짓 자기로 세상을 살아가며, 표면적으로 전혀 문제가 없어 보이지만 그의 내면은 늘 공허하고 무기력하다. 심리학의 대상관계 이론에서는 생애 초기 양육 시기의 발달적 결핍으로 인해 이런 특성을 가진 사람을 경계성 인격 혹은 분열성 인격이라고 한다. 본 연구는 이러한 특성을 가진 기독교의 역사적 인물인 마담 잔느 귀용(Madame Jeanne Guyon, 1648-1717)에 관한 학제 간 연구이다. 잔느 귀용은 17세기 프랑스 신비주의 영성가로, 하나님 체험으로 인격의 변형을 이루었다. 그녀는 생애 초기 유아기와 유년기의 불안정한 양육환경으로 인해 ‘근본적인 신뢰 경험’을 박탈했고, 그로 인해 ‘홀로 있을 수 있는 능력’을 획득하지 못했다. 연구자는 먼저 잔느 귀용의 자서전의 기록을 토대로 오늘날 미국 정신의학회(APA)의 경계성 인격 진단 도구인 DSM-IV-TR의 항목들과 대조 분석했다. 그리고 그 결과 잔느 귀용에게서 경계성 인격의 증후를 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 이유로 삶이 고달팠던 잔느 귀용은 하나님 체험을 통하여 인격의 변형과 성숙을 이루어, 복음 전파자로서 자신의 정체성을 회복하고 자기실현의 삶을 살아갈 수 있었다. 본 연구는 이와 같은 사실에 관하여 심리학의 대상관계 이론가 도널드 위니캇의 이론적 접근으로 독자의 이해를 돕고자 했다.
Abstract
The Genesis record, in which God commands humanity to "be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth," reflects the creative capacity granted to humans by God. Psychologically, this concept can be associated with Donald Woods Winnicott's idea of the "capacity to be alone." Winnicott posited that to live constructively and creatively, one must possess this capacity to be alone. Furthermore, psychoanalyst Melanie Klein stated that the "capacity to be alone" signifies the presence of a good object within one's inner world. Kim Hong-geun likened this "capacity to be alone" to "faith in Immanuel." However, if a person experiences issues in early infancy, they may live without this capacity. Such an individual may feel persistently empty inside, disconnected from the world, and function through a false self. In psychology, individuals displaying these traits due to developmental deficiencies in early caregiving are referred to as having borderline or schizoid personality traits. This study is an interdisciplinary examination of a historical Christian figure, Madame Jeanne Guyon (1648-1717), a 17th-century French mystic who achieved personal transformation through her experience of God. Due to unstable early childhood caregiving, she was deprived of a "fundamental trust experience," and consequently did not acquire the "capacity to be alone." Based on records from Madame Guyon’s autobiography, the researcher conducted a comparative analysis with the diagnostic criteria of borderline personality disorder from the DSM-IV-TR of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), identifying borderline traits in her character. For this reason, Madame Guyon, who endured a difficult life, ultimately achieved transformation and maturity through a profound experience of God. She fulfilled self-realization as a gospel proclaimer, affirming her identity. This study seeks to aid readers' understanding through the theoretical approach of Donald Winnicott, a proponent of object relations theory in psychology.
