Abstract
This study explores the necessity of spirituality education in Korean Christian alternative schools from the perspective of Relational Spirituality. Unlike achievement-centered public education, Christian alternative schools pursue holistic formation that integrates faith and learning, aiming to help students discover identity and meaning of life not only in relation to God but also in relation to others and themselves. To establish a theoretical foundation, this study integrates object relations theory, intersubjectivity, relational realism, and relational-cultural theory, highlighting that spirituality emerges and grows within the triadic relationship of God–others–self. Spirituality education demonstrates meaningful effects across developmental stages, including self-discovery, emotion regulation, character formation, and communal responsibility. Practically, the study proposes both educational and counseling approaches. The educational approach reconceptualizes worship and Bible study as communal participation, incorporates collaborative project-based learning, reflective writing, sharing practices, and the teacher’s role as a witnessing model to internalize relational virtues such as respect, care, and responsibility. The counseling approach introduces daily reflective practices that enable students to discern conflicting internal representations and emotions, fostering self-understanding, discovery of the true self, and ego integration. Relational spirituality education thus transcends knowledge transmission by engaging students in participatory and transformative processes, promoting emotional stability, ethical judgment, and communal solidarity. Ultimately, it is identified as an essential paradigm that strengthens the identity of Christian alternative schools. The study concludes with a call for further field-based models and empirical validation.
