Abstract

Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) provide vital information to characterize the spatial distribution of geomorphological, hydrological, and ecological processes over the landscape. In addition to the overall accuracy related to the construction of a DEM, the optimal grid resolution is one of main technical issues when a DEM is used to model land surface processes. Optimal grid resolution issues have largely been treated as a trade-off between the amount of information derived from a DEM and its cost of storage and processing. It is necessary, however, to approach this issue from the perspectives of whether the constructed DEM represents appropriate geomorphological characteristics. This paper aims to identify the optimal grid resolution for the DEM derived from the 1:5,000 digital topographical map of Korea. We first identified the characteristics of three terrain parameters (slope angle, upslope constributing area, surface curvature) with the change of grid size, and then applied semivariogram analyses to identify the spatial structure of these parameters. The increase of grid size is corresponding with the decrease of slope angle, the increase of upslope contributing area, and the increase of variance of surface curvature. The range and other geostatistical parameters indicate that the 10m grid resolution is the best grid size to describe geomorphological processes at the study area. When the grid resolution is smaller than 10m, the microvariance and interpolation errors increase, which gives detrimental effects to interpret geomorphological processes from the constructed DEM. On the other hand, the grid size larger than 10m is losing significant amount of geomorphological information due to the ‘smoothing effect’ of the DEM.
