Abstract
Charlotte Lennox’s most famous novel The Female Quixote seems to follow the didactic tradition in its portrayal of the ‘crazy’ heroine and her cure by a learned doctor. In the apparent association of romance with femininity and madness, however, the seemingly patriarchal novel exposes the devaluation of female reading and writing practices assumed in the anti-romance position, and turns the criticism towards bad imitations of the form. Recent criticism has suggested that the satiric treatment of romances in The Female Quixote does not necessarily indicate the author’s anti-romance position. This essay examines the way Lennox problematizes the contemporary hierarchical and gendered opposition between romance and the novel. By illustrating men’s abuse of romance, she critiques the abjection of literary foremothers in the historiography of the novel. At the same time, she reinstates romance as a link a daughter can use to connect to a dead, discredited mother. Lennox’s effort to continue a women’s novelistic tradition contributed to the growing confidence of later-century women novelists and scholars such as Clara Reeve, who repositions the foremothers of the novel in The Progress of Romance—a project she owes to Lennox.
