‘한반도 대운하’ 건설 계획에 대한 하천지형학적 검토

본 연구에서는 ‘한반도 대운하’ 건설 계획을 주로 하천지형학적인 관점에서 검토하였다. 한강, 낙동강 등 우리나라 하천들은 대부분 유량 변동이 크고, 수심이 얕기 때문에, 운하 건설에 적합하지 않다. 따라서 운하를 건설하려면 대규모로 하상을 준설하는 것은 물론이고, 수많은 곳에 수위 조절용 댐이나 제방을 쌓아야 한다. 이와 같은 토목 사업들은 결국 하천지형과 그 환경생태계를 심각한 수준에서 파괴하거나 변형시킬 것으로 예측되므로, 운하 건설은 처음부터 시도하지 않는 것이 바람직하다.
Abstract
This study critically reviewed the construction plan of the ?Pan-Korea Grand Waterway? in terms of fluvial geomorphology. The variations of discharge in the Korean rivers such as the Han River, the Nakdong River are abnormally sizable. In addition, the Korean rivers are very shallow almost all year round. Since that, in the planned project, it is unavoidable to construct dams and levees in many places and to dig out channel beds along the whole stretch of rivers. This huge construction project can seriously affect fluvial landforms and environmental ecosystem of the rivers. Considering such environmental impacts, it would be better not to attempt to construct the navigation canal.
