초록

This paper points to the parallel between the predominant tendencies in interpretations of Jhumpa Lahiri’s work and Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s conception of paranoid reading by focusing on the substantive rift between Lahiri’s Whereabouts and a paranoid insistence on viewing her work as ‘minority literature.’ This is an attempt to begin a fractional reorientation and tentative approach toward a certain horizon of possibility beyond paranoid reading. More specifically, the paper examines how certain narrative expectations in Whereabouts are thwarted by the largely episodic nature of the ensuing work and by a close engagement with chance rather than a conformity to clear-cut progression. It subsequently explores the manner in which certain characters in Whereabouts struggle to form particular relationships with others, playing on both the elements of paranoid reading and Sara Ahmed’s conception of the happy script. The paper ultimately traces the trajectories of possibility that the narrator in Whereabouts embodies by remaining open to the contingencies of existence and slipping through the boundaries of the fixed meaning of happiness. It thereby aims to hold space for Lahiri scholarship to embrace the prospect of encountering various avenues of interpretation beyond paranoid reading.
