Abstract

‘High-level planation surface' has been one of controversial concept in Korean geomorphological community. Notwithstanding with its wide acceptance from both general publics and geomorphologists, there are still confusions regarding the definition and spatial extent of these specific landforms. This paper investigated the distribution pattern of ?igh-level planation surface?via terrain analyses, and classified them to interpret their forming processes. Shapes and distribution patterns of these landforms are much more complicated than routinely thought before, and forming processes heavily depend on geological characteristics and historical contingency of landform development. Therefore, the formation of these landforms could not be interpreted by the evolutionary framework; ?ormation of planation surface - tectonic uplift - destruction of planation surface? Instead, tectonic movement and geological condition which are connected with each other by river networks play a central role. This research proposes to use a more widely accepted geomorphological term, ?lateau?instead of ?igh-level planation surface? when someone describe low relief landforms developed along the top of mountain ranges in the Korean Peninsula. Three different types of plateau; volcanic plateaus, granitic plateau, and non-granitic plateau, are identified and described.
